Surgical Procedures for Cataracts

Charles Oestrich MD offers the latest techniques for the treatment of cataracts.

Common Symptoms of Cataracts

In a mature cataract, your pupil may appear grey or white. As it progresses, you may notice your vision's clarity declining to a state that even glasses will not properly correct. Other common cataract symptoms include:
  • A “halo” effect around lights
  • A frequent need to change your glasses or contact prescription
  • Blurry or clouded vision
  • Bright light sensitivity
  • Difficulty seeing at night, especially while driving
  • Double vision in your affected eye
  • Faded or yellowed colors

Cataract Surgery and Treatments

Surgery is a safe and effective way to restore your vision if you are suffering from cataracts. This is usually an outpatient procedure and has a fairly short recovery period. The surgery itself can take 15-20 minutes.

This process involves removing your cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The most commonly used cataract surgical procedure is phacoemulsification, which reduces the recovery time as well as the risks involved compared to a larger incision.

Potential Risk Factors

Any type of surgery has its own unique risks. One complication involved in cataract surgery is the chance of developing a secondary membrane. This can occur when there is scarring of the capsule holding the new lens. This is common and can lead to the blurring of your vision once again following the surgery, resembling the original symptoms. However, it can be easily treated with YAG laser, which is quick and painless.
